Short bio: State of Play creates lovingly crafted games, often combining real world elements with digital games.

Established in 2008, State of Play’s work has won a number of international awards. Headed by Luke Whittaker (who mostly does the art, design, and animation), co-founder Katherine Bidwell, and developer Daniel Fountain, we’re a small team who love what we do. When possible we work with people from all over the creative industries. We recently released Lumino City, a hand-crafted puzzle adventure game made from paper, card, and miniature lights and motors, and it won a BAFTA for Artistic Achievement.

Games at the festival: Lumino City is a game crafted entirely by hand out of paper, card, miniature lights, and motors. Through this environment weaves a clever, charming, and puzzling adventure. Lumi’s grandfather, the caretaker, has been kidnapped. To find him, you must explore and figure out the fascinating mechanisms that power this world.

Grades: Late elementary and middle school (ages 8 and up)

Education value: Through playing Lumino City, you learn about sustainable living through fun and exciting puzzles in your quest to bring power back to the city. Using real world examples, you work with the inhabitants to power their dwellings. Need power? You can use the electricity generated by lemons from tree. Or power a lighthouse using wind energy. You can even use electric eels to power a Ferris Wheel, which just happens to double up as a washing line.

Using ingenuity and following advice passed down from your grandfather, players are encouraged to feel pride in their self-sufficiency and their own abilities. As players discover how the city has been left to fall apart by an oil company focussed merely on profits, the game shows how reliance on limited fossil fuel resources can be harmful and short-sighted. It presents collaborative living, recycling everyday objects, and the creation of incredible inventions as positive, empowering aspirations.

Lumino City introduces the players to eco-friendly and self-sufficient ways of living in an engaging way, and meshes those concepts seamless with the gameplay like no other game.
